Power That Builds Up

When power is not abused, it is often unused or misused. There are the fatalists who overemphasize the power of the divine and under-emphasize human power – they pray but fail to work. Pragmatists often overemphasize human power and under-emphasize the divine – they work but fail to pray. Then, there are the ‘do-alists’ who try to separate human power from the divine. The story of Nehemiah shows us that if God powers the universe and empowers humans, we ought to pray as we work. It also points us to how the Almighty God rebuilds the ruins of fallen humanity through the gracious power of the gospel.

Scripture References: Nehemiah 2:1-20

From Series: "Idols and the City"

Lagosians know a thing or two about physical idols but in the 21st century we think of them more as harmless cultural artefacts kept in museums. The Bible however, teaches us that they’re more than that – our hearts are idol-making factories that exert power on us through three main surface idols: Money, Sex and Power. In the “Idols and the City” sermon series, from September 2nd to November 25th, we will see that only the Gospel of Christ can truly give us the fulfillment we seek from these idols and deliver us from their bondage.
